How to fix Hulu subtitles out of sync

Hulu’s captions stream with the video, so there’s no manual timing control. When they fall out of sync, the fixes are about resetting the stream, the app and the connection.

Works on: Web · Apps · TV

Step by step

  1. 1

    Restart the episode

Stop playback completely and reload the episode. Captions that slipped during buffering usually snap back into place on a fresh start.

  2. 2

    Toggle captions off and on

Open the subtitle settings, turn captions off, wait a few seconds, then turn them back on to force them to reload in time with the audio.

  3. 3

Clear the app cache or reinstall

On a TV, phone or streaming stick, clear the Hulu app’s cache (or uninstall and reinstall it). A stale cache is one of the most common causes reported by users.

  4. 4

Update the app and your device

Install any pending Hulu app and system updates. Out-of-date apps frequently mistime captions on smart TVs and streaming devices.

  5. 5

    Check your internet connection

A weak or unstable connection causes buffering that desyncs captions. Restart your router or switch to a faster network, then reload the title.

  6. 6

    Report a consistently broken title

If one show or episode is always out of sync for everyone, it’s an encoding issue on Hulu’s end — report it through Hulu Help so they can fix the source.

Hulu controls the caption stream, so a subtitle file tool can’t change what the app displays. SubAlign helps only with your own .srt/.vtt files for local or downloaded videos.

Hulu subtitle sync FAQ

Why are my Hulu subtitles out of sync?

Hulu streams captions alongside the video, so they drift from buffering, a stale app cache, an outdated app, or a mistimed encode on Hulu’s side. Restarting the episode, toggling captions, clearing the cache, and updating the app resolve most cases.

How do I fix Hulu captions that lag behind the audio?

Restart the episode, turn captions off and back on, clear or reinstall the Hulu app, update the app and device, and check your connection. If a single title is always wrong for everyone, report it to Hulu — it’s a source-side encoding problem.

Can I manually sync Hulu subtitles like in VLC?

No. Hulu has no manual subtitle delay control the way VLC does. Because the captions are part of the stream, you can only reset the stream and the app rather than offset the timing yourself.
